What is task democracy? In short: a model for society-wide coordination of sustainability transitions. The basic idea is to join forces of five ‘task groups’ from society at large: science, citizens, government, businesses and non-profits. Task democracy provides blueprints and rules for administrative platforms where representatives of these five task groups can prioritise issues, take initiative and negotiate their division of tasks. The model is scalable from sub-local to international. | Why?The case for task democracy builds on two observations. One is that both liberal democracy and autocratic state forms appear unable to coordinate sustainability transitions timely and effectively. Two is that time to counter the emerging polycrisis is running out. Therefore, finding alternative governance models that may establish a steady state planet is urgent. Task democracy is one option to explore. | About usThe Task Democracy Research Community is hosted by the Noorden Duurzaam association in The Netherlands, and is open to researchers and practitioners world-wide. As a community we share contacts, knowledge and case data, and we co-create, review and test task democracy model improvements. Everything is open access. Apply for membership if you want to contribute or access beta materials. |
